Red Scarf Girl_Ji-Li_Prosecution-Q&A

Procecution

Question 1:

Why did you not participate in the blackboard newspaper, when it was a big honor?

Cause in Primary school I was honor student and as soon as they thought I was a black whelp they turned on me. Most of class mates either ignored me or treated me so bad I stayed at home. They wrote da-zi-bao about me and a teacher being in a relationship, because I was a good teacher and I was his 'teachers pet' and they were jealous of me. Mao blamed the teachers which were just using the curiculum and had taught us all s much and helped us grow, and Mao blamed the teachers and said they were teaching us bad things. And I didn't want that to happen in m new school, my new school was a new chance, a chance to start over. As seen on page.171.

Question 2:
Why were you in a 'black family' and considered a 'black whelp'?

I t was a very unfair thing, I was considered a 'black whelp' from a 'black family' because Mao told people that anyone who had any black history was considered black. My grandfather yes was a landlord but NO my father is NOT a landlord or a rightest.. As seen on page 210-215. I shouldn't be blamed for something generations from me.

Question 3:
How did the newspaper artical 'half city Jiangs' change your life?

I was in High School I was doing great I had a new chance and that article changed it all it made people look at me very different. But most of all ... it made me almost change my name. They sweared at my mom they were so rude and nasty...as seen on page.253. And made me hate my family. My family is so important to me and I hate Mao and the newspaper and there writers for making me feel that way. My grandfather was a landlord but my father definatly isn't and is not a rightest. As seen on page.212

Question 4:
What privacy and life did the read guards interupt?

They came into our uninvited without warning and just destroyed our stuff. They came and tipped out everything our drawers and took many things. They took my stamp collection, some clothes, and much more. But they completely interupted my privacy by seeing and dumping my sanitary belt on the floor.. As seen on page. 133-137. They came a second time to take a letter which I had hidden. In the cats litter box. And when they found found it they made my grandmother kneel down and humiliated my mother. As seen on page.254.

Question 5:
Why did your Aunt Xi-Wen have a da-zi-boa on her house?

She was accused of being bourgeoisie and wearing to much make-up. This I think was unfair because she and her husband worked for that money and the make-up was from her sister in America and should be used. I think that it was not right to do this to her and the make-up ... well Mao wears make-up!!

Defence

Question 1:
Why did you support Mao?

Mao I liked at the beginning of the book and that is because he was always show in a good way and he was praised. We would recite nice poems about him and songs and think of him in a god like manor. He was always shown good and NEVER bad and his schools did teach me a lot and I am thankful for that. I guess I always thought of him as good because that is the way we were brainwashed to think and that was what we were always suppost to look at him and think of him. That was the the way he wanted us to think and that was the way our community was to be and I wanted to fit in.

Four Olds: The four olds are old habits, old ideas, old culture, and old customs(p.21).
Examples: Old habits, an example is beeing named after something(p.1). Old ideas is saying that umbrella is Yang-san(p.34/35). Old culture is thearing down old signs because they are old(p.22-25). Old customs are wearing pants with a narrow bottom(p.32).
Prosperity:Prosperity is the name of a market(p.21/22)

Da-zi-bao: A da-zi-bao is a form of propaganda in the shape of a large written poster presenting an important issue. During the cultural Revolution, da-zi-bao were used to attack and humiliate people(p.276).
What happens: They were made by kids and they wrote nasty messages about there teachers on them and hung them in the hallways and then out side on the wallls and then on rope strung across the school yard(p.39).
Jiang Xi-wen: She was a 50 year old women and was Ji-Li's aunt. Everyone thought she was mean because of the things she and just about a few weeks before the da-zi-bao a few students had climed into her yard to pick some mulberry leaves for there silk worms and she had complained to the school(p.44).
Da-zi-bao for her:They put da-zi-bao on her house and made her put it up because they do not like her and she is a bourgeouis and cares about outward beaty and not so much inward and Mao believes everyone should have more inward beauty(p.46-47).

6.Why does Ji-Li stop going to school for awhile?(What has she been accused of?)

Ji-Li saw a da-zi-bao of her being accused of having a relationship with a teacher, Ke Cheng-li because she was his favorite student)p.49). So she plans to stay home for afew days but then gets a high fever and stays home for about 10 days(p.52).

Rightist: A member of the conservative party who disagrees with or opposed the Communist party(p.283).
Remolding of ideology: To remold an ideology you must get rid of the old to make room for the new. In this case I think the four olds to make room for the 'four news'. And when they tell Jiang Ji-Li to "remold her ideology" I think they mean because they think her father is a rightist to become a loyal Communist Party follower.

Her husband haddied a capitalist cause he 'exploted the masses' by owning factories (p.82).The red guards have stripped the house bare of all her belongings and she has sent her sons to coninue the buisness in which this started in Hong Kong(p.82).Everyone gossiped about her and how she had to get a nicer dress than another if they got a fancy dress and new diomond ring than before(p.84).

10. What does the sound of drums and gongs mean in Ji-Li's life?

To Ji-Li the sound of drums and gongs means another search and another exciting Red Guard excevation...at first(p.85). Soon after these sounds are scary and nerve racking, they might be coming to search her house (p.120-121).

Song Po-Po: Song Po-Po was a nanny for Ji-Li and her siblings and then stayed and was a house keeper. She had been there so long that she was like another grand-mother.
Ji-Li's life: She had a big input on Ji-Li's life so when she had to leave Ji-Li was sad but also happy that her family were no longer explioting her and did not understand why she wasn't happy about that(p.88). She didn't want her to leave and she had no place to work and didn't know what would happen to her.Song Po-Po also used to sing and she could read, and read music. Ji-Li misses the songs that she sang(p.88).

12. What is a dowry? What items does Grandmother have left from her dowry? What does Ji-Li's mother do with their ancestors' clothes? Why does she do this?

Dowry: Is the gifts you get when you get married(p.94-95).
Grandmothers dowry: When Ji-Li's  grandmother got married part of her dowry were 4 trunks of rich red leather(which Ji-Li's dad had to stain black now because they were considered four olds,p.94-95). In one trunk were lovely silks and satin gowns in all colors from there ancestors(p.96).
What happens to the clothes: Ji-Li's mother and grandmother took the gowns and cut them up to turn into quilts and mops(p.96).
Why: They are doing this because they are considered four olds and if they didn't and the Red Guards found out they would say they were hiding them.

Flex Day Field Trip

Flex Day Field Trip

October 12, 2008 Flex dayGarment Factory
Questions
1. Name one idea you have after this visit that connects to the idea of using resources!
2. Name one idea you have after this visit that relates to the word 'population'.
3. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the top score, how would you rate the quality of the work environment you saw here, and why?
4. What does the word 'export' have to do with today's visit?
5. What do you think the level of safety is here? What makes you think this?
6. How old do you think the workers here are, on average?
7. What is one question you still have about the garment industry here in Bangladesh?
8. What types of issues does this factory cause or help solve in terms of resources here in Bangladesh?
9. What might you say about economic issues based on today's visit?
Do you think the products being manufactured here help or hurt Bangladesh?

Answer one of the above questions and add two points of observation or reflection from the day abouts the two places we visited (Sterling Styles factory and Up2Date apparel office). Also you can compose a question that you may have from our flex day adventures. You should post these three items on your blog page.1) answer a question 2) make two observations or reflections (or write your own questions that you may have) Three things in total!

I will answer Question 3:
On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the top score, how would you rate the quality of the work environment you saw here, and why?

My answer: I would say 6 for the quality of the work environment. I would say this because they wore masks, they had 1 hour for lunch, they had a medical care room, and a day care for babies and kids. But they didn't wear shoes and this is bad in a place were there are needles and complicated machines that could fall or drip harmful liquid.

I have two questions for the observations for the day.
1).How much do they get payed , and if it is per hour if so what are there work hours?

2).Do the workers live near by and what kind of houses do they live in?

One thing I noticed was that they didn't smile once and I smiled at them to try to get them to smile but they just didn't smile.

END-OF-BOOK REFLECTION QUESTIONS

END-OF-BOOK REFLECTION QUESTIONS
The Revealers Begin brainstorming the answers with members of your group!
1. Ms. Hogeboom told Russell that everyone was reading the Revealer and that the atmosphere of the school was changing…”It was like a small revolution” (175). Explain what she means about the school culture and their affect on it.

2. Describe why The Revealers project was so successful with students and judges alike.

3. Russell, Elliot, and Catalina's hypothesis for their science fair project was "if bullying and harassment incidents were brought to light among the whole student body in a school then there will be a reduction in these incidents as well as them being less severe in nature"(194). Did the three main characters prove their hypothesis? Discuss. What is one way you could use technology to improve the school at AISD?

1.She means that since blogger came out the school is reacting in a positive way they are being nicer school wide(atmosphere). Since the stories of others were shared people undrstood what kind of problem it was (big) and that doing it is wrong. Although not all responed lots did in a good way by not bullying and/or being nicer to people.

2. The revealers project was so succesful with all people because it showed videos, stories, the notes written to Catalina, and interviews. All these different things make it interesting so it atracts lots of people. Everyone can relate to this because everyone has been either a bystander, the bully, or the victum.

3.Yes they proved there hypothesis because Richie was nice to Russel thats atleast one. And Mrs.Hogeboom said they were making a difference and Mrs.Capeli said they would bring back the KidNet. A way we could use technology to improve AIS/D is to share bullying stories like KidNet but we could use FirstClass. We could also usee more laptops to do assinments instead of paper so they will not get stolen, copied, or broken.

Blog response instructions:• Answer the questions in complete sentences and use proper English (restrain from using MSN chat style of writing).• Use evidence from the novel to support your answer and include page numbers.• When commenting to your peers, be respectful in your language and about their responses. It is okay to disagree, but do it in a polite manner. When Elliot writes about his experience with the Jock Rots and sends it out over the KidNet, he includes the following quote in his letter.
"I think people ought to realize that stuff like this goes on every day…The rest of you are all part of it-because you let it go on and maybe you think it's funny, or you think it only happens to geeky outsiders and kids who are smaller or fatter or skinnier or don't have so many friends or so much money as you. So tell me-what happens when you don't have so many friends one day, or you don't have so much money, or something bad happens to you?" (91-92)Blog Question:What is the message is he trying to get across to his classmates?

I think the message he is trying to get out to the students is that bullying happens under your nose and you should take action to stop it because what if something happens to you and your the victim how would you feel then. Don't bully for the fun or to take out anger on others... just DON'T bully.I completely agree with what he says and that it is like if we stick together and try to stop bullying in this school t can work.

Blog: Role Reversal

Blog response instructions:
• Answer the questions in complete sentences and use proper English (restrain from using MSN chat style of writing).
• Use evidence from the novel to support your answer and include page numbers.
• When commenting to your peers, be respectful in your language and about their responses. It is okay to disagree, but do it in a polite manner.

Blog Question: After the Bully Lab was renamed, the Revealers, and the stories of the three Darkland students were released and well received by the student body, Elliot wanted to publish Russell’s narrative about Richie punching Russell in the face.
1) Why was Russell so opposed to the idea (pg. 110)? Explain. (4 pts)
2) What is happening to the relationship between Russell and Richie. (3 pts)
3) Two Peer Comments (4 pts each)

Blog Answer:

1. I think the story of him and Richie Tucker on The Revealer because he thinks he has changed. On p.110 Russell says that Richie has been acting differently and that he could ask him questions. And I think that Russell thinks there is a chance of them not being the bully and victim and more like friends. My thought is that Richie actuly doesn't want to be friends but is not wanting to get into trouble.

2.Richie and Russell are doing well at the beginning they were having quite a lot of trouble. From the root beer being poured over Russells head (p.14-15) to the punching in the face(p. 44). They are now asking each other questions and even though that didn't go well they are not hurting each other. And  they are no longer in a relationship  where Richie hurts Russell all the time. In fact Richie stands up for Russell when  he is being threatened by Burke and Blannchette(p.97). I think that Russell and Richie by the end of the book will no longer  think of each other as either the bully or victim but as sort of friends.
